Lactic acidosis: Acidosis due to the buildup of lactic acid in the body when cells make lactic acid (from glucose) faster than it can be metabolized. The signs are unusually deep and rapid breathing, vomiting, and abdominal pain. It can occur in out-of-control diabetes and as a rare but dreaded adverse reaction from the type 2 diabetes drug metformin (Glucophage), particularly in the presence of kidney disease or congestive heart failure.
